Everyone knows that mountains are a well known part of the lithosphere. Name a unique mountain and what makes it so unique. This can include a chain of mountains or just a single mountain. Please no repeating. :-)
One unique mountain is Mount Everest. Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world, although not quite the tallest. It is approximately 60 million years old and suspected to currently grow about a quarter of an inch to a full inch higher each year. It is 29,035 feet high and is a challenge that many people take to try and reach the top. Although a bunch of people don't make it to the top more have returned then not.
Mount Mitchell is a very unique mountain. It is not only the largest mountain in North Carolina, it is the highest peak in the eastern part of the United States. It was named after Elisha Mitchell, the man that determined its height in 1835. Returning to verify his measurements, he climbed the mountain again in 1857. During this expedition, he fell to his death off of the mountain.
The Appalachian Mountains are unique because they are a system of mountains chained together. They were thought of the tallest mountains about 460 million years ago until the Himalayas were formed.
The mountain Mauna Kea a huge, very tall volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii (called Hawaii). Mauna Kea stretches 13,796 above water and 19,680 underwater, for a total of 33,476. If you count what is under ground, it is technically the tallest mountain.
Mount Fuji in Japan the mountain formed over 600,000 years ago in four different phases of volcanic activity. This mountain is Japans’ famous symbol surrounded by 5 lakes. It rises to 12,388 feet tall; it’s also the 35th most prominent mountain in the world.
Mount Olympus is located in Greece. It is the tallest mountain in Greece at 2,917 meters. It has 52 peaks. In Greek mythology this mountain was the home to the greek gods.
One interesting range of mountains are the Great Smokey Mountains. This range of mountains is unique because it is located in North Carolina! The highest point in this mountain range is 6,643 feet tall.
A very interesting mountain caught my eye because of the name. The name of this mountain is K2. It is in the same mountain region as Mt. Everest. Mt. K2 is 8,611 meters (28,251 feet) tall.
