Earthquakes
Just recently a major earthquake has hit Japan, and just last year four major earthquakes of 6.4 and above hit on or near Haiti, Chili, Japan, and Taiwan. Usually earthquakes over 5.0 or above are rare and only happen every few or more years. What do you think can be predicted of any upcoming earthquakes and what might be causing them? Also, how could you prepare for any earthquakes that could affect you?

Major earthquakes might be starting to become more often then usual due to animation of previously dormant tectonic plates. Most of the major earthquakes that have happened within the past year were along plates that typically don't move, excluding japan. It may also be a normal function within the earth over a cycle of thousands of years. I think that if any major earthquakes were to show up near or in North Carolina we would want to be prepared with things such as somewhere to go to if one is expected as well as supplies for if there is nowhere to go after such an event would happen.
ReplyDeleteI think earthquakes in the future will be over 5.0. Earthquakes are caused by movement of tectonic plates. We could build buildings to withstand earthquakes.
ReplyDeleteI predict that earthquakes will be getting worse in the future and that most of them will be over a 5.0. I think that this will happen because tectonic plates that haven't been active for millions of years will suddenly start moving. If this does happen in North Carolina, the first thing we need to do is get mentally prepared because we aren 't used to earthquakes.
ReplyDeleteI predict that earthquakes in the future will be way worse! This will probably happen because the unactive tectonic plates will start moving again. To prepare for any upcoming earthquakes we should start building places that can withstand earthquakes that we can as shelters etc.
ReplyDeleteEarthquakes by itself are very treacherous and can cause unpredictable damage and occurrence. I do not believe we can actually prepare for any earthquake because it seems they happen on their own time. I think after the earthquake in Japan which really shocked me, as the future expands we can expect sudden frights like Japan. However, I hope and pray that it doesn't happen anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteEarthquakes are caused by the shifting of tectonic plates, which release a sudden burst of energy. To prepare for these we should measure the pressure of common Earthquake producing plates to predict on which ones are about to cause an earthquake. We can build our buildings to withstand earthquakes, and have special funds to help people suffering from earthquake damage.
ReplyDeleteI think large earthquakes could be expected for the future. I think that because Japan just had a large earthquake recently. Earthquakes do not frequently occur there. If it happened there it could happen anywhere else. Earthquakes are caused by tectonic plates rubbing, bumping, or just moving. We could mentally prepare ourselves as well as build our houses and buildings to be able to withstand the shaking.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there is no way to known ahead of time if a earthquake is coming. If an earthquake were to happen here I would not really no what to do, but I do known that any disater you will need to be prepared by stocking up on food and water, and common supplies like batteries and falshlights. I think that tectonic plates shifting is what is causing all of the earthquakes.
ReplyDeleteI predict that in the near future that the earthquakes are going to be getting worse. My reason of this is because the last major 'quakes has been high in magnitude and have destroyed a lot. They have occured because continental drift. The Earth's plates has shifted which cause a 'quake to occur on it. In the future I will hope that a 'quake will not happen in tiny Elizabeth City. If one were to happen I would be very scared and I will probably panic because i've never been in that situation.
ReplyDeleteI think earthquakes could make it up to a 15.0 (if there is such a thing). I don't think there is a way to be prepared except having an escape plan. You can't predict them easily, they just happen. However, they know of two plates that are beginning to oppose each other, and that in the near future, it could cause a massive earthquake in California.
ReplyDeleteEarthquakes are caused by the shifting of earth's tectonic plates. You really can't prepare for them, it's not like a tsunami.
ReplyDeleteEarthquakes are caused by active plate tectonics moving and can be measured on a scale from 1-10(Mohs Scale) and you cant techniqually be prepared for a earthquake cause technology is that advanced to know when one is coming.
